Using estimates

AI jewelry estimate or professional appraisal?

They answer different questions. Learn what an image-based result can offer and when to bring in an independent appraiser.

They start from different evidence

An image-based estimate starts with what is visible in a photograph. It can organize possible observations about type, style, materials or stones and give you language to investigate. It may miss hidden construction, treatments, repairs, weight, provenance or the item’s exact condition.

A professional appraisal involves examining and describing the item for a stated purpose. The Gemological Institute of America notes that an appraisal should contain a quality analysis, description and valuation. The methods and intended value basis depend on why the appraisal is being prepared.

Ask what decision the number is meant to support

An insurance replacement value, a resale estimate and an estate valuation are not interchangeable. Before paying for an appraisal, explain the decision you need to make and ask what standard, market and documentation the appraiser will use.

Bring any receipts, prior reports, repair records, maker information and provenance you have. Ask whether the appraiser is independent of the sale and what qualifications and fees apply.

Use an AI estimate for orientation

A CaratAI result can help you start a list of questions: What type of item might this be? Which visible feature is worth photographing more clearly? What could a term in the result mean? The follow-up chat can help explain the app’s own image-based observations.

It cannot turn a photograph into a certified gemological result or professional appraisal. It also cannot guarantee authenticity, an exact material, or what a buyer would pay.

Bring in a professional when the stakes are real

If you are insuring, selling, dividing an estate, documenting a donation or relying on authenticity, seek an independent specialist appropriate to the task. A laboratory report, metal testing or an in-person appraisal may answer questions that a photo cannot.

Keep the AI result with a note that it was generated from an image. Store it beside—not in place of—reports, invoices and professional findings.
